Today, with a pontifical mass in St.
Peter’s Basilica, Pope Benedict XVI officially marked the end of the Synod
on the New Evangelization. Calling on the bishops and cardinals in attendance,
the pope reiterated that the Church has a responsibility to evangelize to
the modern world. He further observed that even though the New Evangelization
will take on different forms in each country, that the message of Jesus will
remain the same. It is just a matter of perhaps using different tools or
vocabulary to promote the Gospel and to explain why it's relevant in society
and in people's daily lives.

However, the goal of the New
Evangelization is to intensify the faith in countries where Christianity is
losing strength, everything from not going to Mass or celebrating the
Sacraments, to not passing on the faith to younger generations. Above it all,
it's an initiative to fight against religious illiteracy and
indifference. In a document that will soon be released, the Pope will
summarize the key points and solutions that were discussed throughout the Synod
that lasted for three weeks.
