Funeral services were held for Cardinal Carlo Maria
Martini, at Milan's Cathedral this afternoon (September 3 2012). He served as that city's archbishop for
almost 23 years, before passing away last Friday at the age of 85. Since his death, roughly 200,000people have visited his coffin to pay their respects.
The funeral Mass was presided by the current Archbishop of Milan, Cardinal Angelo Scola. Benedict XVI did not attend the Mass, but he did send Cardinal Angelo Comastri as his personal representative.
Through a written statement, the Pope described Martini as a “man of
God who lived out the Scriptures throughout his life, always giving
reason for hope.”
